State Sen. Dan McConchie seeking participants in his Youth Advisory Council

State Senator Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) is inviting high school students interested in a hands-on learning experience about public policy and the legislative process to apply to attend his first annual Youth Advisory Council.

Students who join the Council will meet with Sen. McConchie twice during the school year – once in the fall in Lake Zurich and once in the spring at the Capitol in Springfield. Not only will students learn directly from area leaders about how public policy works in Illinois, but they will also get to work together to develop ideas for possible new state legislation.

“This initiative helps students interested in public service to connect with elected officials and other leaders to learn about state government,” said Sen. McConchie. “I am proud to offer this hands-on learning experience to our future leaders.”

In addition to working with Senator McConchie, students will also hear presentations from the following leaders:

·         Congressman Peter Roskam, 6th District of Illinois

·         State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim, Lake County

·         Jim Slusher, Assistant Managing Editor, Daily Herald

·         Bonnie Conte, Owner of Avalon Salon in Deer Park

The first meeting of the Youth Advisory Council will take place Wednesday, October 26 in Lake Zurich. The spring meeting will be on-site at the Capitol in Springfield. Students will be able to visit the floor of the Senate, experience the legislative process first-hand, and participate in a mock committee hearing.

“During their time at the Youth Advisory Council, students will not only learn how state government works, but they will also learn how to work together in a group and to understand and respect different opinions,” said McConchie. “This program helps today’s students become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Principals from high schools in the 26th District are invited to nominate up to ten outstanding students to take part in the program. Students are also welcome to apply directly. Those interested can contact Angelia Rendina with the Illinois Senate Staff for more information:
