Once again, the Illinois Senate was presented with a budget plan that continues down the path of increasing taxes first and insufficiently cutting spending, said State Senator Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) following today’s budget votes.
On May 17, the Illinois Senate voted on a number of bills that make up the so called “Grand Bargain” budget plan that has been in the works for months by Senate members on both sides of the aisle. The Senate voted on 9 bills including Senate Bill 6 which appropriates over $35 billion in state spending.
“The spending bill that passed the Senate today does not go near far enough to reduce the size of government, and will ultimately result in large tax increases in order to balance the budget,” said Sen. McConchie. “I’ve said it before and unfortunately it still holds true today, this “Grand Bargain” started in the wrong place. It starts with taxing Illinoisans more and promises cuts down the road. That is not good for the economy of this state and it’s definitely not good for taxpayers.”
Sen. McConchie noted that he was able to support several of the bills that were brought to a vote today. The following measures were supported by Sen. McConchie:
- Senate Bill 3: Local Government Consolidation
- Senate Bill 8: Procurement Reform
- Senate Bill 16: Pension Reform
- Senate Bill 478: Property Tax Relief and School Mandate Relief
