Illinois drivers will soon have a four-year or eight-year option for their drivers licenses thanks to legislation sponsored by State Senator Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) that was signed into law on August 9.
Senate Bill 275 requires the Secretary of State to develop rules for the new process by January 1, 2027, and motorists must be given the four-year or eight-year option no later than July 1 of that same year.
“Most people do not relish spending time at the DMV, and this new law will provide relief to most drivers,” said McConchie. “It brings Illinois more in line with other states with regard to the length of time drivers licenses remain valid and will decrease problems motorists experience when they try to schedule appointments at their local driver services facility.
The bill received unanimous approval in the Senate and House. The cost of an eight-year license will be $60, which is double the cost of a four-year license.
