McConchie welcomes high school students to Capitol to take part in state government

28 high school students from across the 26th Senate District traveled to the Capitol March 15 to take part in state government and the legislative process as part of State Senator Dan McConchie’s (R-Hawthorn Woods) Youth Advisory Council.

“I hear it often that more young people need to get involved in the legislative process,” said Sen. McConchie. “I hope this program got these students more excited about public policy, and I hope they walk away considering it as a career option.”

Senator McConchie’s YAC program brings students together in the fall to discuss, propose, and vote on legislation. The winning bill is then advanced to the spring meeting at the Capitol, which took place today.

Students who attended today’s event got to participate in a mock committee hearing, where they were broken up into groups representing the major players in the realm of public policy including senators, lobbyists, concerned citizens, members of the media, and even the governor and staff. This simulation gave them a chance to debate the legislation they voted on in the fall.

Students also got the opportunity to meet with Governor Bruce Rauner, tour the state’s Capitol building, and engage in conversation about issues impacting the state of Illinois.

Sen. McConchie is looking for students to attend his next Youth Advisory Council in the fall. Students must be a junior or senior in high school and attend a school located within the 26th Senate District.
