A huge victory for victims of sex crimes was handed down by the Illinois Senate today, as legislators passed legislation to hold those who sexually abuse children accountable. State Senator Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods), who carried the proposal in the Senate, says this bill is part of an ongoing effort to protect minors from sex abuse and trafficking.
“No one who solicits sex from a minor should escape punishment by simply claiming they didn’t know the victim was underage. In Illinois, this is currently happening,” said Sen. McConchie. “Thankfully, with this legislation, it will soon stop, and victims of these crimes will get the justice they deserve.”
House Bill 4593, which passed with unanimous support, prevents predators from claiming they did not know they solicited a minor for sex in order to escape punishment.
“I’m proud to have partnered with my colleague, State Representative Chris Bos, on this legislation, and look forward to our continued work on behalf of these vulnerable victims.”
The legislation now heads to the Governor’s desk.
