Springfield, IL- State Sen. Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) commented May 10 about the passage of SB 231, which is a proposed school funding formula that advances devastating cuts for suburban schools.
“Today, I voted against legislation that would bail out Chicago Public Schools at the expense of suburban taxpayers. We can all agree the current school funding formula is broken and needs to be fixed; however, SB 231 is not the answer to the problem,” McConchie said. “The answer is to take the time that is needed to craft a new and better formula with input from all major stakeholders. In the meantime, Gov. Rauner and legislative Republicans have a proposal on the table that would allow us to fully fund general state aid for schools, for the first time in seven years, with existing state revenues. Passing a budget now to fund K-12 will ensure schools open on time this fall, and fully funding GSA will provide our schools the stability they need. I urge my colleagues in the House to do as I did today and vote ‘no’ on SB 231.”
